White water cannon truck not for Lanka

With police using water cannons to disperse protesters across the country, a newly imported armoured water-cannon truck that was transported to Colombo on the Southern Expressway on Friday under heavy security after it was cleared from the Hambantota harbour sparked fears that the Government was taking tough measures under the emergency regulations.

However, Special Task Force Commandant Waruna Jayasundara said the white truck from India was imported to be used in Mali by Sri Lanka’s peacekeeping troops. He said the United Nations would bear the cost of the import. The Indian High Commission said yesterday the Indian credit line was not used to import the truck.
